Mark Adderley - Biography
Adderley, born in England in 1960, was a member of The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 1976 to 1978. He studied the bassoon at The Guildhall School of Music from 1978 to 1981, when he emigrated to Norway where he has been resident since. He was active for a short time as a bassoonist and performed with The Norwegian Opera, The Oslo Philharmonic and The Stavanger Symphony Orchestra before commencing his studies in composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 1985 under the tuition of Olav Anton Thommessen and Lasse Thoresen. He graduated in 1992 and has been a full-time composer stationed in Oslo ever since.
His ensemble work, Reverberations was awarded the prize for Work of the Year in 1994, by The Society of Norwegian Composers. His compositions have been nominated for The Edvard Prize three times: Homage to C.P.E. Bach in 1993, The Cloud of Unknowing in 1998 and Bad Language in 2003. Amongst his many compositions can be mentioned the oboe concerto, Still Talking to Myself, which was commissioned by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. His harp concerto, All Plans Last Only Until the First Shot was premiered at the Ultima festival 2010 by Ensemble Ernst and Sunniva Rødland Wettre as soloist. His trombone concerto, Contortions III A, which was commissioned by Marius Hesby and The Royal Naval Military Band was premiered and taken on tour in 2011.
Following this he will write a violin concerto, Bite the Dog II, for Lars Erik ter Jung and the Telemark Chamber Orchestra. The Affinis Ensemble will premiere the 30 minute work Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Out in 2011. His idea for an opera based on the myth of Gilgamesh was recently accepted for developmental work by Micheal McCarthy and Ad Opera.
He is at present leader of the Grant Committee of the Society of Norwegian composers where he is also a member of The Expert Committee. He was a member for several years of the Assesment Committee of TONO, the Norwegian organization for composers´ copyright. Today he is The Norwegian Composers´ Union representative i TONO´s expert panel. He is the recipient of many grants including The State 3 Year Grant from 1994-97, and again from 2008-10.
His music is available on 14 CD publications, amongst which is the portrait CD Bad Language. He has also been honoured with two concerts dedicated solely to his music.
