Ringstad wins Eurovision Young Musicians finals

17-year old viola player Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad takes home the victory of the 2012 Eurovision Young Musicians finals.

At an EBU-broadcasted major finals show held in Vienna on Fri 11th of May, 17-year old viola player Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad took home the victory of the 2012 Eurovision Young Musicians competition playing Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto.

-Overwhelming! was Ringstad’s initial response after having received the first prize. –It was such an amazing experience, standing on that stage with waves of cheers coming from the audience. This is by far the coolest thing I’ve ever been part of!

Second place was awarded to Emmanuel Tjeknavorian from Austria, whilst Narek Kazazyan of Armenia came in third.

Rigstad’s EYM victory marks the fourth time a student from the Barratt Due Music Institute in Oslo has reached the finale in this prestigious, biannual competition: In 2006 trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth won second prize, in 2008 violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing won thrid prize, and in 2010 the violinist Guro Kleven Hagen won second prize.
