Solveig Kringelborn - Biography
Norwegian-born, Solveig Kringelborn studied at the Norwegian State Academy of Music and the Royal Academy of Opera in Stockholm. She made her operatic debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1987 and, by 1990, had received the Norwegian Critics’ Award for her Mimi in La Bohème.
In 1991 Miss Kringelborn made her critically-acclaimed debut at the BBC Proms in the world première of Lutoslawski’s Chantefleurs et Chantefables (dedicated to Solveig) and she has now sung this piece throughout the world. Other concerts have included performances with Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, Herbert Blomstedt, Neeme Järvi, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Claudio Abbado, Sir Neville Marriner and Sir Colin Davis.
Solveig Kringelborn’s recordings for BMG/RCA, Chandos and Virgin include Grieg Songs with Rozhdestvensky, Grieg’s Haugtussa and Olav Tryggvason, Sibelius’ Luonnotar and Lutoslawski songs and most recently a solo recital CD with Malcolm Martineau titled Black Roses, which won a Norwegian Grammy. In addition, she has recorded Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony for DG under Giuseppe Sinopoli.
She is now one of the leading Scandinavian singers with a speciality for Norwegian song and also possesses a wide operatic repertoire.
Outside her native country, Solveig Kringelborn has sung at several of the leading opera houses and festivals, including; the Vienna State Opera, the Bastille and Chatelet in Paris, San Francisco, Amsterdam, La Monnaie in Brussels, Munich, Deutsche Oper (Berlin), the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Glyndebourne Festival, and the Rome Opera. She made her debut at the 1993 Salzburg Festival as Fiordiligi/Così fan tutte (von Dohnanyi), returning for the Countess in a new production of Le Nozze di Figaro in 1995 (Bondy/Harnoncourt) and 1996 (de Waart).
Recent engagements include Tatyana/Eugene Onegin and Eva/Die Meistersinger at the Metropolitan Opera, Elisabeth/Tannhäuser in Hamburg, Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony at the Salzburg Festival, Missa Solemnis with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Donna Elvira/Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera and with Antonio Pappano and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Rezia in Zurich Opera’s production of Oberon (Schaaf /Gardiner), Tatyana at the Liceu in Barcelona (Konwitschny /Anissimov), Marenka/The Bartered Bride (Lehnhoff/Kout) for Glyndebourne Festival, Marie/Wozzeck (Mussbach/von Dohnanyi) at Zurich Opera, and a recording of Sibelius’ opera The Maiden in the Tower for Virgin.
This season Solveig has already sung Rosalinde/Die Fledermaus at the Metropolitan Opera, Lisa/Pique Dame at the Liceu in Barcelona, Elisabeth/ Tannhäuser in Zurich and Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony at the Komische Oper, Berlin. Future engagements include a return to the Metropolitan Opera for Eva/Die Meistersinger and Donna Elvira/Don Giovanni, Marie/Wozzeck at Aix en Provence, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the San Fancisco Opera, Ariadne auf Naxos at the Opéra de la Bastille and Marenka/The Bartered Bride at the Glyndebourne Festival.
