The music on this record represents a journey across four generations of composers from three different continents. George Crumb, Toru Takemitsu, Olivier Messiaen, Claude Debussy and Edvard Grieg are the featured composers on this release. The aim of Sæverud and Røttingen is to draw lines across the centuries, binding current and older pieces together and achieve a sense of timelessness. One common denominator for the pieces can be the emphasis of timbre and general mood versus determination of pitch. One could argue that the aim is to produce music in which the quality of sound takes precedence over pitch. Sæverud and Røttingen’s approach has been to take the journey backwards in time, beginning with the newest and most rarefied and ending with the oldest and most outwardly solid. They might be ending in the past, but the release as whole points solidly forward towards the future.
