Maria Mena and Sondre Lerche are set to fight Sahara Hotnights, Saybia and The Hives for the “Best Nordic Act” trophy that is awarded at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Rome on 18 November.

Both Mena and Lerche have enjoyed substantial success in the US over the last year. Mena scored a major Billboard hit with her “You’re the only one”. Her strong chart performance triggered a wave of media appearances (including a slot at Letterman’s) as well as a very successful summer tour. In late July Maria Mena released her second album “White turns blue” (Columbia/Sony) to great domestic and international acclaim. Currently she’s focusing on Scandinavian and European territories.

Says Maria Mena to Norwegian daily VG on her MTV nomination: “It’s so cool! I’ll definitely be in Rome for the awards – even if it’s just to have a fine dinner with my manager. I don’t think that I have any real chance to win the thing, but still it’s a thrill to be nominated.”

Sondre Lerche burst onto the US market with his debut album “Faces Down” (Virgin/Astralwerks) some two years ago. Since then, Lerche has toured frequently both as a solo act and with his trusted accompanying band. His second album “Two Way Monologue” released earlier this year earned him a new string of very strong reviews as well as substantial airplay and a number of high profiled media appearances. Currently Lerche is in the midst of a mammoth 37-date tour in the US and Canada.

Lerche is also pleased with his MTV nomination: “It’s nice to be nominated for such nice awards. MTV have given a lot of airtime to my videos and this nomination shows that I’m still a part of the game” says the Bergen singer/songwriter to VG.
