Dan Styffe: Revisited
MIC’s Listen to Norway series continues with Dan Styffe’s 'Revisited'.
Double bass virtuoso Dan Styffe occupies a position at the paragon of Norwegian music. Swedish born Styffe has spent his entire professional career in Norway. His education, working with bass maestros both domestic and foreign, included apprenticeship with the legendary Gary Kerr. Styffe has been employed by several of Norway’s finest institutional orchestras and has played with a range of leading ensembles and musicians, in Norway and abroad. Revisited is his second album. On it he interprets works by some of the most distinguished composers of the twentieth century as well as pieces originally written for him by contemporary composers.
Styffe is joined by Anne Hveding, flutes, Øystein Birkeland, cello and Gonzalo Moreno, piano. All of whom are highly accomplished, award winning and sought-after musicians. Together they perform music by Astor Piazzolla, John Persen, Giancinto Scelsi, Teppo Hauto-aho, Gisle Kverndokk, Iannis Xenakis and Paul Ramsier.
The selection of music, ranging from tango to deconstructed opera, serves to exhibit the diversity of the double bass as a solo instrument. Revisited re-explores the double bass’ different traditional roles as well as whole new realms of expression.
