MICs Listen to Norway series continues with Sondre Bratland: Draumkvedet
“Draumkvedet” literally means “The Dream Ballad” and is the dream vision of Olav Åsteson, who falls asleep on Christmas Eve and sleeps through all twelve days of Christmas. When Olav wakes up, he rides to church to sit in the doorway and recount his dream. The ballad, whose origin is unknown, has been passed on from generation to generation over centuries and in numerous variants. After centuries of oral transmission “Draumkvedet” has achieved status as a central national cultural treasure in Norway. Through Sondre Bratland’s solo renditions of the ancient poem, recorded at various locations en route to the pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela, “Draumkvedet” is given a lasting outlet for future generations.
