With strong competition from jazz legends Wayne Shorter and Keith Jarrett, Norwegian futuristic big-band Jaga Jazzist snatched the coveted prize of jazz album of the year 2002 for their debut A Livingroom Hush release.
The young and energetic collective of Jaga Jazzist have been active on the Norwegian tour circuit for the last seven years and have built up a loyal following. After several hailed EPs and singles, Jaga released their debut album A Livingroom Hush in March 2001 in Norway. The album was met with rave reviews and international attention picked up as A Livingroom.. was released abroad by Norwegian indie label Smalltown Supersound. Several international labels directed their focus onto the Norwegian collective, and in the end it was highly respected UK electronica veteran-label Ninja Tune that secured the international rights for Jaga’s releases. Ninja Tune, which is known for such groundbreaking acts as Coldcut, Amon Tobim, Herbaliser and Cinematic Orchestra, re-released A Livingroom Hush autumn 2002.
Jaga Jazzist released their second studio album The Stix in September 2002 in Norway. The Stix was met with a reception that equalled the debut album, and it’s now scheduled for international release through Ninja Tune in March/April.
January will also see the release of the Animal Chin 10”/CD EP on GSL. More info can be found here.
As of writing Jaga has only one gig listed at their schedule; the five-year anniversary of renowned Oslo club Blå. This club was an important catalyst for Jaga Jazzists creative development and its vibrant social and musical scene helped to spearhead the wave of Norwegian acts which Jaga now represent.
Jaga Jazzist is expected to continue touring in support for their The Stix album. Check out Jaga’s own site for tour info.
