MICs Listen to Norway series continues with Hallvard T. Bjørgum & Co: Free Field. Norwegian, American and Azerbaijani forces are melting together at this record.
As a master of the Harding fiddle, Hallvard T. Bjørgum is of Norway’s most celebrated folk musicians. Not so strange maybe, since he grew up in a famous folk musician family in Setesdal, the heart of traditional Norwegian music. On this album, though, he has stepped out of his traditional “stall” and embraced the free field of music genres. Fiddle meets guitar, rock meets stev, Norway meets Azerbaijan. Bjørgum has gathered exciting companions for this musical journey. Garth Hudson (The Band) sets the tone on the title song Free Field, melting Norwegian folk songs with an old American religious song. At Nils, Blondie Chaplin’s voice (Rolling Stone, The Beach Boys) meets Kirsten Bråten Berg’s traditional kved, just to mention a few. Bjørgum accompanies his friends on the journey with compelling fiddle play.
