Listen to Norway continues with Siri Torjesen: Fartein Valen – Complete Songs
The soprano Siri Torjesen has together with the pianist Håkon Austbø and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Christian Eggen recorded the complete songs by the Norwegian composer Fartein Valen (1887-1952). The CD has been marking the fiftieth anniversary of the death of one of the most distinctive figures in Norwegian cultural life in the twentieth century. Songs such as these with strict polyphony and floating tonal lines need a singer able to convey their sensibility with absolute purity of tone and evenness of line. Siri Torjesen has these qualities in abundance as she sings Goethe and Schiller’s lyrics filled with love, pain, longing and death. Pianist Håkon Austbø is able to meld piano with voice subtly and resourcefully, accompanied by the ever-present Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
