A Scot, Paul Curran will be the new general manager of the Oslo’s Opera as it makes the transition to its stunning new building next year.
This week saw the new general manager of the Oslo Opera being announced. 42 year old Scotsman Paul Curran will lead the Oslo Opera artistically as the institution makes the transition to its stunning new Opera House by the city’s quickly changing waterfront.
Says Curran “Norway and Scotland has much in common, both nationally and culturally, and given my passion for opera and affection for Scandinavia, I couldn’t have wished for a more exciting challenge, artistically as well as personally. I look forward to bringing the Norwegian Opera to a new level in the world’s most beautiful opera house!”
Curran, who hails from Glasgow, was originally trained as a dancer, having studied in London and Helsinki and has performed with such institutions as the Scottish Ballet. An injury forced him to change careers and Curran chose to focus on drama studies at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. Curran’s list of successful achievements includes performances of Tannhäuser at the La Scala in Milan, Daphe at the La Fenice in Venice, Peter Grimes at the Santa Fe opera, A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Pittsburgh Opera and Central City Opera in Denver, Mirandolina at the Wexford Opera and Il Trovatore at the Tokyo Opera. Last year saw Curran directing Lucia di Lammermoor in Halle, Lady Macbeth of Mtsenks at the Canadian Opera Company, Tosca in St. Petersburg and and La Bohéme at the Santa Fe opera.
As of 2009, the Norwegian Opera will see a change of its organization with managing director Tom Remlov as the institution’s head and with general managers for opera, ballet and music as artistic leaders within their fields of expertise.
Says Remlov on the new general manager: “Due to the Opera’s new organizational structure, the artistic qualifications have been the decisive factor when choosing a new general manager. Internationally, Paul Curran is a highly renowned opera director who has shown a great artistic breadth throughout his career, and he has explicitly stated that the Norwegian Opera will be an arena for innovation and uniqueness. Paul Curran meets all of our requirements for a new general manager and in addition to this he also comes from a culture with close ties to our own while also maintaining a thoroughly multicultural stance.”
