One of Norway’s foremost Grieg performers, pianist Håvard Gimse, teams up with Norwegian Army Band, Bergen for a German tour next week.
The main feature on the programme of Håvard Gimse and the Norwegian Army Band, Bergen’s upcoming German tour is Edvard Grieg’s best know work, the Piano Concerto in a-minor. The a-minor Concerto is generally regarded as Grieg’s breakthrough work on the international scene, and derives much inspiration from Schumann’s Piano Concertos and the year Grieg spent in Leipzig as a student. In early May, Gimse and the Army Band are set to return to the city that would prove to have such a profound influence on Grieg and his works that were created with the dual influences of both traditional Norwegian folk music and central European styles as taught at the Leipzig Conservatory.
In addition to piano soloist Håvard Gimse, the upcoming German tour with NABB also features Norwegian actor Minken Fosheim who will do a spoken word performance featuring stories from Grieg’s childhood and upbringing in Bergen.
The Norwegian Army Band, Bergen is one of Norway’s oldest ensembles being founded in 1792 and is highly revered for its high artistic level. NABB has released nine CDs and has toured Germany, the U.K., Estonia, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. NABB will be conducted by the orchestra’s artistic leader Trond Korsgård.
After gaining his Diploma at "Hochschule der Künste Berlin" in 1995 (Leygraf), Håvard Gimse studied with professor Jiri Hlinka in Norway. In 1987 he won 1st prize in the «Jugend Musiziert Competition». Since then his career as a recording and concert artist expanded significantly without participating in piano competitions.
Gimse is recipient of the prestigious «Grieg Prize» (1996), the «Steinway Prize» (1995) and recently the Norwegian Sibelius Society´s "Sibelius Prize" (Nov 2004).
His distinct and rich musical palette reflect his artistic strength, experienced from early years and developed through extensive and varied concert activities. His repertory is equally broad, already including more than 30 concertos performed with orchestra, numerous solo works and chamber music programs.
This has brought Gimse forward as one of Norway´s most distinguished classical concert and recording artists, with more than 30 CDs to his credit.
A large number of these recordings for NAIM (Chopin & Grieg), Naxos (Sibelius, Grieg and Tveitt), Sony (Grieg Violin Sonatas),Chandos (Mozart) and Simax have received superb reviews, including recommendations in the Peguin Guide, with «Editor´s Choice´s» and top scores in Gramophone, CD Review, BBC Music Magazine and Phono Forum.
