This album features veteran bassist Gewelt in a duo setting with pianist Christian Jacob. Gewelt, a Berklee graduate who has studied under greats Pastorius and Dave Holland, is today one of Norway’s most respected jazz bassists. He performs regularly with Norwegian jazz greats such as Knut Riisnæs, and has also long-standing collaborations with international players – Billy Cobham being one of the best known. French born, USA-based Christian Jacob is perhaps best known as a sideman with Brazilian vocalist Flora Purim as well as being a Concord recording artist. This album sees the two move through a repertoire of own compositions and interpretations of standards where the emphasis is on the melodic qualities of both melodies and solos. The two manage to swing so effortlessly and solo so eloquently you won’t miss the drummer nor a saxophonist.
To quote Bassplayer Magazine which has praised the album and Gewelt’s playing: "This intimate recording with pianist Christian Jacob showcases Gewelt's gorgeous tone, thoughtful accompaniment, and melodic solo.."
The Gewelt/Jacob duo is now ready with a follow-up to Duality. Interplay is the name given to the new duo album which is also released on Gewelt’s Resonant Music label. You can listen to the album here.
