This week it was announced that computer and video games retailer group EB Games is to acquire all Norwegian outlets of music chain Free Record Shop.
One likely consequence of the takeover will be that the ex. Free Record Shop outlets will no longer carry music products and focus solely on gaming. Over the last decade, Free Record Shop has been the market leader along with Norwegian retailer group Platekompaniet and the Norwegian music market has now lost one of its key outlets.
Says Platekompaniet co-founder Rolf Presthus: “This is a sad day for the Norwegian music industry. Platekompaniet does not welcome this development; we do support a substantial and large retailer sector on the domestic market. We’re not necessarily competing for the same customer base all the time. We feel that more retailing outlets in one location will generate more interest in music products.
Presthus finds it difficult to predict the consequences for the domestic market, but one thing seems certain, the record buying public will be left facing fewer outlets to choose from. “Given the fact that EB Games will not be shifting music products, it is likely that some regions in Norway will be left without music shops. Needless to say, this is not positive for domestic sales figures.”
