Eldbjørg Raknes

Freelance singer,- composer and -teacher, living in Trondheim, Norway.
Born 1970.
Education from Trondheim Music Conservatory, Norway, jazz department (1990 - 1994).

Since 1991 she has been active as a composer for ensembles in which she is also a singer. She has particularly worked with improvisation and exploitation of the possibilities of the voice. Raknes has worked with other singers, a cappella in ESE (96-99), and free improvisation with Sidsel Endresen, Elin Rosseland and KVITRETTEN (91-2001). In addition she has composed songs to children’s poems by the Norwegian poet Inger Hagerup.

Current activities:
The group TINGeLING is based on Raknes´compositions to poems by a number of poets (W.C.Williams, F.G.Lorca, Karin Boye, Dorothy Parker, Rudyard Kipling, Emily Dickinson…) In addition to Edbjørg Raknes the members of the group are: Nils-Olav Johansen guitar bass/voice, Steinar S.Nickelsen,el.pno/voice, Per Oddvar Johansen, drums/perc./progr./voice. TINGeLING’s debut CD was released in 1997 (NorCD) and received international acclaim.

Raknes´ composition for the Norwegian festival Vossa Jazz 2001, so much depends upon a red wheel barrow, was released on CD in 2002.

As a solo singer Raknes works with live sampling and effx, based on her own material and improvisation, mostly without lyrics.

Raknes has also been working with other jazz musicians, such as: Jon Balke, Anders Jormin, Bendik Hofseth, Christian Wallumrød, Arve Henriksen, Ketil Bjørnstad, Ståle Storløkken a.o.

She has been on frequent tours in Norway, and has visited festivals all over Europe.

As a composer she has received grants from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and from NOPA - Society of Composers and Lyricists.

Eldbjørg Raknes teaches at the NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of music (the music conservatory in Trondheim).
