The current director for the Norwegian Opera, Bjørn Simensen, steps down at the end of 2008 and his successor has now been appointed; film and theatre veteran Tom Remlov.
Tom Remlov, who's headed the Norwegian film production agency Norsk Film for the past decade, beat out a long list of candidates to take over the top spot at the Norwegian opera company.
Remlov was chosen over such cultural heavyweights in Norway as former government ministers of culture minister and the heads of the annual cultural festival in Bergen, Festspillene.
He won't actually take over the top post until January 1, 2009, the first full calendar year after Den Norske Opera has moved into the new Opera House on Oslo's waterfront.
Until that time, he'll work as an adviser to the opera's board of directors, with authority for long-term planning.
Remlov has been director of Norsk Film for the past decade and has produced a string of Norwegian and Scandinavian films. He spent the previous decade as head of Den Nationale Scene (theater) in Bergen.
As chief executive of Den Norske Opera in a new management organization, Remlov will have authority over the respective chiefs of the opera, the ballet and the orchestra. He'll also have hiring authority over those who will replace the current chiefs when their contracts run out.
